I.any object composed of materials perceptible by the senses, body, substance (opp. anima and animus; the definition in pr.).

II.Lit. (very frequent in every period and species of composition).

A.In gen., a body, whether living or lifeless — Poet., plur. for sing.

B.In partic.

1.The flesh of animal bodies; cf., prooem. § 24 — In a play upon words.

b.Transf., the wood under the bark of a tree. — Of discourse.

2.A lifeless body, a corpse — In a double sense, Halm. — Poet., the souls of the dead, the shades or departed spirits.

3.As opposed to the head, the trunk.
